Major General Ian Cardozo joined the National Defense Academy (NDA) after completing his education. He then joined the 5 Gorkha Rifles (Frontier Force). He was posted to Kashmir and then commanded the 1st Battalion of the 5th Regiment of Gorkha Rifles aka “1/5GR”. He served with 4/5 Gorkha Rifles. and fought two wars. Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 and Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
